Senior User Experience & Interface Designer

Responsibilities:

  • Implements detailed plans and recommends policies/procedures regarding program specific requirements.
  • Supervises, motivates and trains assigned staff, ensuring effective teamwork, high standards of work quality and organizational performance, continuous learning and encourages innovation in others.
  • Supervises the day to day operation of all assigned staff including the scheduling, assigning and reviewing of work. Authorizes and coordinates vacation and overtime requests. Monitors and evaluates staff performance, approves salary increments, hears grievances and recommends disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Provides input into and administers assigned budget, ensuring that expenditures are controlled and maintained within approved budget limitations.
  • Designs and applies User Experience Design/User Interface Design (UX/UI) and user-centered design best practices to projects, ensuring all digital products and services are high-quality, accessible, and meet business objectives.
  • Negotiates with senior management, clients and various partners to balance competing goals and priorities.
  • Designs and implements strategic digital products and services that meet design and production standards and are in accordance with legislative requirements.
  • Identifies and prioritizes design debt, addressing areas for improvement, ensuring that design standards are maintained.
  • Collaborates with clients to translate business requirements into mockups; written and diagrammatic documentation, and prototypes for testing, validation, and production. Ensures, continuously involvement throughout development to meet client needs.
  • Leads and/or supports the identification of staff/resource requirements/ allocations as well as recruitment efforts to meet project and business requirements.
  • Manages the sustainment of solutions to ensure applications are available, including the recording all change requests, maintaining, and satisfying business requirements, as well as monitoring and tracking new business solutions requirements, assessing impact, prioritizing and seeking changes.
  • Leads and advocates for the development, maintenance and usage of design standard documentation in collaboration with internal and external colleagues and divisional clients.
  • Designs and recommends innovative approaches and adopts new human-centric techniques based on industry standards to ensure applications are modern and user-friendly, including transitioning to new design tools and updates techniques in response to changes in legislation such as AODA to maintain compliance.
  • Develops and maintains the City's design system, including the creation of new design patterns.
  • Ensures that all applications adhere to digital accessibility standards and compliance to the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), promoting inclusivity and accessibility.
  • Supports the design and sustainment of web and mobile front-end development as well as the standards to support the City's web presence, while supporting Division's in their online service delivery, customer service and customer experience improvements.
  • Analyzes and assesses organizational effectiveness issues and prepares confidential reports on program and service delivery improvements, changes, systems, processes, and practices and makes recommendations.
  • Develops business cases and reports to senior management related to staff/resource requirements/allocations, financial and operational plans, alternate service delivery and recommendations for changes in project management methods and business processes.
  • Supports the Manager and leads a team in advocating and delivering effective UX/UI standards and designs.
  • Provides in depth advice to clients on design best practices and standards, ensuring adherence to City of Toronto and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
  • Leads, advises and presents high-fidelity mockups to divisional clients and partners, incorporating feedback into design iterations to ensure a consistent and seamless user experience.
  • Evaluates and recommends technical solutions and professional services throughout the solution delivery process.
  • Evaluates the work performance of external service providers, ensuring quality, timeliness, cost-effectiveness and completion of required tasks.
  • Recommends changes in business methods and processes, identifying opportunities for efficiencies and cost savings. Prepares reports outlining scenarios involving operational or labour utilization issues and changes to staffing levels and/or resource allocations.
  • Stays current on UX design trends and techniques, advising senior management on the adoption of new technologies and/or processes.
  • Supports and monitors the technology aspects of the City of Toronto's corporate web platforms, including the corporate web content management system, corporate website search engine, intranet website and other related systems, to ensure a robust public and staff facing web performance that will support the City's online and mobile service delivery.

Skills:

  • Considerable experience in User Experience and User Interface Design, demonstrated through prototyping, wireframing, usability studies and working with design specifications.
  • Considerable experience working with business users to determine their requirements; lead design workshops (including remote workshops), gain consensus, and present recommended design solutions.
  • Considerable experience in prototyping using Figma and other design tools, including design, prototyping, building components, and communicating designs to others.
  • Considerable experience is developing and maintaining design systems and in designing applications following the design system.
  • Experience in coaching, training and/or providing work direction to team members and assessing outcomes.
  • Experience in applying WCAG 2.1 (W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1) in the design of websites and web applications across a range of technologies and type of devices (e.g., desktop, mobile).
  • Post-secondary education or certification in Digital or User Experience Design is considered an asset.
  • Strong inter-personal skills with the ability to work effectively as a member of a team, collaboratively with others in multidisciplinary team environment and work independently, as required.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, listening, and interacting skills.
  • Ability to work with competing demands, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Highly developed facilitation, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Exceptional ability to seamlessly distill very technical concepts to business users and vice versa.
  • Exceptionally self-motivated and directed approach, with a strong attention to detail and organization.
  • Knowledge and experience with Adobe Creative Suite, specifically Photoshop and Illustrator is an asset.
